William George Earrey

EARREY, William George

William George (names reversed in military records) Earrey was born in 1900 in Edmonton, north London to William George Earrey and Rosina Susan Stubbles. William Snr was a Labourer on his son’s baptism entry and in the 1901 census he gave his occupation as ‘Bricklayer’s Labourer’. In 1911 he was a ‘Boiler Maker’s Helper’. A second son, Ernest, was born in 1901 and a daughter, Rosina Susan Florence, in 1905 by which time the family had moved to Gillingham in Kent. In the 1911 census Rosina was visiting her married sister Lilian, and she had her daughter Rosina with her.

William George Earrey enlisted in the Surrey Yeomanry at Maidstone. In 1918 there were two Surrey Yeomanry reserve regiments in Ireland, but his index records do not detail which he was in. He was presumably returning home on leave when he travelled on RMS Leinster on the 10th of October. He did not survive the sinking nor was his body recovered. His name is recorded on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton. His brother Ernest enlisted in the Royal Navy at nearby Chatham in 1917.
